A capacity figure is not a diagnosis
The familiar NAS dashboard is good at totals: volume size, used space and free space. Those numbers answer whether there is a problem, but not where it lives. A 400 GB increase might be one virtual-machine image, forty project exports or a backup job that started retaining an extra generation.
Folder-level analysis changes the question from How full is the NAS? to Which folders and files account for the change? That is the useful level for a household photo archive, a studio share or a small office server because it produces a review list instead of another warning gauge.
Treat the low-space alert as the start of an investigation, not permission to delete the first large files you find.
The boundary is Windows access
Zenovix Storage Manager runs on Windows. It can analyse a NAS, mapped drive or UNC path when that location is accessible to the signed-in Windows account. A mapped drive such as N: and a direct path such as \\server\share are two routes to the same kind of job: Windows must be able to open the location and read the files first.
That boundary is deliberate. Zenovix does not install an agent on the NAS, discover every appliance on the network, bypass share permissions or predict disk and RAID health. If File Explorer asks for credentials, reports that a share is offline or denies access to a folder, fix that connection before treating any scan as complete.
- Open the share in File Explorer with the same Windows account that will run the scan.
- Confirm that the folders you intend to analyse can be listed and that a sample file can be opened.
- Use the UNC path for scheduled work when a mapped drive may not exist in a non-interactive Windows session.
- Start with one affected share or department folder rather than scanning an entire storage estate without a question in mind.
Run a focused network-storage scan
In Scan Setup, add the mapped drive, NAS folder or UNC share you want to investigate. Add a local folder or another network root only when a comparison across locations is part of the question. Keeping the scope visible matters: it lets you distinguish a complete analysis of one share from a partial sample of a much larger NAS.
- Check the network connection and open the target share in File Explorer.
- Add the precise share or subfolder in Zenovix Scan Setup.
- Use Fast Scan for a quick storage overview; use full analysis when exact duplicate groups or deeper review results are needed.
- Let the scan finish, then read the skipped-file summary before trusting the totals.
- Move from categories to the largest folders and files, narrowing the result with dashboard filters.
- Review possible actions in the desktop app; do not turn a size ranking into an automatic deletion rule.
Network scans are affected by latency, Wi-Fi quality, the NAS workload, file count and server permissions. A million tiny files can take longer to enumerate than a much larger folder containing a few video files. For the same reason, a focused first pass is usually more informative than throwing every share into one scan.
Read the result in three passes
1. Find the dominant folders and file types
Begin with the largest folders, files, categories and size bands. This shows whether the pressure comes from a known workload or from something unexpected. Video and archive files may be legitimate; an abandoned export directory or repeated installer cache may not be. The analyser supplies the evidence, but the folder owner supplies the context.
2. Separate exact duplicates from similar files
Exact duplicate detection is a separate, higher-confidence question. Zenovix can require the same file size and compare SHA-256 content hashes, so differently named files can still be grouped when their bytes match. Similar-file results remain separate because a resized image, edited document or re-encoded video may be related without being interchangeable.
Scanning a NAS together with a local archive or second share can expose copies spread across locations. Do not deduplicate a deliberate backup against its source: two identical files on independent storage may represent resilience rather than waste. 3. Account for everything the scan skipped
A network analysis is only as complete as the access it received. Locked files, unavailable paths and folders outside the account's permissions need to remain visible as limitations. Zenovix reports skipped and inaccessible items rather than quietly counting them as analysed. If a protected finance folder was skipped, the result is still useful for the rest of the share, but it is not a total for the whole NAS.
Turn one scan into a storage record
A one-off scan solves today's mystery. Recurring reports answer a different question: what is growing, and how quickly? Zenovix Pro can save Scheduled Scan Plans and use its read-only CLI with Windows Task Scheduler to write JSON, CSV, Excel-compatible XLSX, Storage History Workbooks or ODBC history for locations Windows can access.
The separation between reporting and cleanup is important. The CLI analyses and writes reports; it does not delete, move, archive or rename files. A weekly NAS report can therefore run unattended without becoming an unattended cleanup job. Decisions about files stay in the desktop review workflow.

Network cleanup needs a wider safety margin
Deleting from a network share is not the same as deleting from a local Documents folder. Depending on the server and share configuration, the Windows Recycle Bin may not provide a recovery route. Other people, applications, media libraries or backup jobs may also depend on the path you are changing.
- Confirm who owns the folder and whether another user or service depends on it.
- Check whether an apparent duplicate is part of a backup, snapshot or retention policy.
- Prefer moving or archiving uncertain material into a controlled recovery-aware workflow.
- Delete only after the scan scope, skipped items and recovery options are understood.
Zenovix does not clean a NAS automatically. The desktop app presents findings for review and requires explicit confirmation before cleanup. That restraint is not friction to remove; on shared storage, it is part of the safety model.

Can a Windows disk space analyser scan a NAS?
Yes, when Windows can access the NAS share. Add a mapped drive or UNC path such as \\server\share. The analyser cannot bypass NAS authentication, permissions or an offline connection.
Can Zenovix find large files on a network drive?
Yes. It can rank accessible folders and files, group results by type and size, and help narrow the result with dashboard filters. Skipped or inaccessible items remain a stated limitation of the scan.
Can it find duplicate files between a NAS and a PC?
Yes. Include the accessible NAS location and the local folder in the same full analysis. Exact groups use content matching rather than filenames. Deliberate backup copies should not be treated as wasted space automatically.
Does Zenovix monitor NAS health or RAID failures?
No. It analyses storage contents that Windows can read. It is not a NAS discovery service, hardware-health monitor, SMART tool or RAID failure predictor.
Can NAS reports run on a schedule?
